Genting Highland is located on the top of Ulu Kali of the Titiwangsa mountain range - 58 km in the northwest of Kuala Lumpur, with an altitude of 1800m above sea level. At this height, the air is quite cool with a temperature of about 23 - 25C, ideal for holiday. It gets colder and cloudy in the morning as well as evening.
Genting Highland History
The history of Genting Highland is tied with the name of businessman Lim Goh Tong who desired to build a resort on the hill close to Kuala Lumpur, where the climate is fresh and cool like Cameron Highland. In 1965, Mr. Lim Goh Tong and the late politician Mohamad Noah Omar founded the company Genting Highlands.
They started building a path to the top, then built the resorts, and got a casino license. After that, two fox routes Awana Skyway and Genting Skyway were constructed. Genting Skyway cable car route is 3.38km long and originates from Gohtong Jaya town which is a satellite town of Genting Highland, famous for its cuisine, especially delicious Chinese food, in addition to street food, orchards including Musang King durian. but it will suit traveling by private car. Therefore I chose to go by bus and took the Awana Skyway cable car. This route is even more convenient as outlets of branded brands are located in the area opposite the Awana Skyway bus station.
How to travel to the Genting Highland?
The most common way to get to the Genting Highland is by drive. It's more convenient to drive by personal transportation as you can make some stops on the way or stay at a resort some where on the plateau. Another way to reach Genting Highland with very moderate cost is getting the bus from Kuala Lumpur.
Start at KL Sentral and book a bus ticket at 10 Ringgit per way, you are taken to the Awana Bus station. From Awana bus station, you can buy cable car tickets to go to Genting highland. This cable car will have a midway station so you can get off and visit Chin Swee Temple. After visiting the temple, you can continue on the cable car reaching the top. It’s quite convenient for those who do not have a private car.
Things to do on Genting Highland
Chin Swee Temple
The first impression is its location is quite stunning with a view of the green primeval forest slopes and the winding road to Genting plateau. Due to the treacherous terrain with dangerous rocky slopes, the use of modern machinery is quite difficult, so they used manual labor to dig the foundation for this temple. After 18 years, the temple was completed and opened to visitors from March 1994.
After get off the cable car station, you will see a large courtyard with a statue of Lim Goh Tong. Going down from there, you will see the cave temple with supporting red columns worshiping Chin Swee, a Buddhist monk who has been a Buddhist monk for a long time; and worshiped as a god in Fujian province. If you go up, you will see giant statues of Buddha and Quan Am, statues of other buddhas, as well as exhibits about life in hell, etc.
After walking for a while, we felt a bit tired, so we bought a durian for eating to revive lost energy. Continue onto the cable car and go up genting highland.
Genting Complex
There are resorts and hotels from 3 to 5 stars, amusement and entertainment complexes Theme Parks, casinos, shopping centers on Genting Highland. This 26-acre Genting Skyworlds - an outdoor theme park has been under construction since 2013. According to the plan, it would be open in 2016, but due to some issue regarding an agreement with Fox Entertainment, it was until February 2022 that Genting Skyworlds was officially opened.
The standard day ticket is 189 Ringgit per person. If you check on the website and buy online, the price is cheaper. The Theme Park features 25 thrilling rides and attractions based on many movies and franchises like Ice Age, Rio, Life of Pi, Night at the Museum, etc.
The cable car stop is on the 4th floor of SkyAvenue located in front of the First World Hotel. This 3-star hotel with 3 towers with more than 7300 rooms. We first explore SkyAvenue with 4 floors including restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. In terms of cuisine, there are also many attractive and beautifully decorated restaurants. There's also a Malaysian food court that introduces cuisine of various regions from Penang to Melaka; and there are many restaurants that you must have seen in Kuala Lumpur. Well, at the end, when I was about to go down, we found this area with chill bars. Take a stroll over here, you will find many interesting corners.
After SkyAvenue, if you still want to continue shopping, or have more spare time, you can explore the other 2 malls, Genting Grand Complex and First World Plaza. There is also a SkyCasio area in SkyAvenue for those who are passionate about these intellectual sports with good guesses and luck. Although I’m not a lucky person, I also want to go in for a look, but the rule is no camera so you guys can go and experience it yourself.
Adjacent to SkyAvenue is an extremely shimmering indoor entertainment area called Skytropolis. There are quite a few games designed just for kids, families, and some more thrills. You can buy individual tickets for each game, or buy a day ticket with unlimited participation, or choose a package with additional bowling or join the adventureland, zipline, 4D museum. The average price of 65 to 90 Ringgit.
Speaking of shopping, in addition to the 3 shopping malls on Genting highland, don't forget to visit the premium outlet and Awana SkyCentral where you get off the bus at the Awana bus station.
I spent some time shopping at the Premium Outlet. These are still booths of high-end brands, but I like the open and airy space of this place. Regarding the price, this outlet has a better price.
Afternoon sunset isn't fine. The sunset on the mountain is so pleasant, but I turn my back to head toward the bus driver to go home. So I spent a full day exploring Genting Highland which was quite interesting.
